Barr Memorial Library Presents Muppet Treasure Island!

Muppet Treasure Island (1996) is a musical adventure comedy that reimagines Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel Treasure Island through the wonderfully chaotic lens of the Muppets.

The story follows young Jim Hawkins, who discovers a treasure map left behind by a mysterious pirate. Determined to seek his fortune, Jim sets sail aboard the Hispaniola with his loyal friends Gonzo and Rizzo. Their voyage is captained by the stern but honorable Captain Smollett (played by Kermit the Frog).

However, danger lurks below deck. The ship’s charming yet suspicious cook, Long John Silver (played by Tim Curry), leads a crew of disguised pirates who plan to seize the treasure for themselves. As mutiny brews, Jim must decide who to trust and find the courage to stand up to Silver—who, despite his villainy, forms a complicated bond with the boy.

The adventure culminates on the treasure-filled island, where the Muppets deliver a mix of slapstick chaos, heartfelt moments, and big musical numbers. In classic Muppet fashion, the film balances genuine adventure with self-aware humor, fourth-wall breaks, and a lot of felt-covered mayhem.
