After class registration closes, each student will be given a code to complete the pre-classroom online training portion. All online content must be completed prior to the in-water training. Participants must show proof of completion to attend class. Pre-course skills test will be completed on the first day of class. Failure to pass the pre-course skills test will result in cancellation of class and forfeiture of $50 of the original $225 class course fee.
Prerequisite In-Water Pretest:
Participants must be at least 15 years old and able to complete the following:
Pre-Course Skills Test Requirements (Completed on the First Day of Class)
To continue with the course, participants must successfully complete the following skills assessment:
Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence
➔ Jump into the water from the side, fully submerge, return to the surface, and swim 150 yards continuously.
➔ After the swim, tread water for 2 minutes without support.
➔ Swim an additional 50 yards immediately after treading.
➔ Goggles are permitted for this portion.
Timed Event (Must be completed within 1 minute, 40 seconds)
➔ Start in the water and swim 20 yards.
➔ Perform a surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet and retrieve a 10-pound object.
➔ Return to the surface and swim on your back while holding the object with both hands, keeping your face at or near the surface.
➔ Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
➔ Goggles are NOT permitted for this portion.
Course Completion Requirements
● Candidates must successfully complete the pre-course requirements.
● Attendance at all scheduled sessions is mandatory.
● Certification is not guaranteed by attendance alone; candidates must complete all required online coursework, successfully demonstrate in-water skills and pass all written and practical exams.
● It is strongly recommended that participants practice the required skills before the course begins to improve their chances of success.
Participants must attend all three of the training sessions they registered for and successfully complete a skills test and written exam to receive certification. Any class conflicts may be discussed with the instructor and approved prior to class. Certification is through the American Red Cross and is valid for two years.
Cost
Cost of Lifeguard Training is $225, paid at the time of registration and includes hip pouch and CPR pocket mask
